Publications

From 2016 to 2020, I led a team in making magazines. This involved not only creating articles and advertisements, but also the frameworks my team used to create their own.

The Frameworks

Managing a team means providing all the support they need to effectively do their job. Part of that support is building the operating template they use to create their articles and the magazine itself. I want the team using their mental energy on creative, not setup, so I’ve made things as accessible as possible. I consider this UX in a way; the users in this case are my design team.

The details matter. Small things like pre-setting the content fitting on placeholder frames, pre-building the Table of Contents definitions so it works automatically when they need it, these take a few minutes once on my end, but save each individual member of the team the same time, month over month. That’s a geometric time savings.

Management also includes defining the team workflow, including production standards, quality assurance checking, and order of operations. That doesn’t mean grading work like a professor, it means setting the framework for us to all review each other, discuss ideas and strategies to refine our process, and proceeding in an order that naturally prevents mistakes instead of just fixing them later. A second set of eyes is critical no matter the skill level, and these strategies are how we help each other make a better product.

The Articles

We didn’t strictly template the articles, each should feel individual and reflective of the company featured.

The Advertisements

We worked directly with clients to make a variety of advertising formats for the magazine, from double-page spreads all the way down to quarter-pages. Here are a few examples of my designs.

The Covers

Lastly we of course made the covers. I worked primarily on Construction in Focus and Cannabis Brightline for this portion, but I’ve done covers for the other titles as well.
